Each card is a focused prompt and answer — formatted and ready to study.

Edit before you study

Refine wording, merge duplicates, and cut cards you don't need before exporting.

Adaptive practice & exam mode

Works with any PDF

Lecture slides, textbook chapters, research papers, or handwritten notes — upload and go.

Quizlet vs Scholarly

Where Quizlet wins — and where Scholarly is faster

Quizlet is a great place to drill terms. Scholarly is the fastest way to get the set built — and more ways to study it.

Quizlet

Best for quick term drills. Familiar study modes — Learn, Match, and Test — make it easy to memorize term/definition pairs.

Huge library of sets other students have already made.

But you still type each card yourself, or hunt for a set that matches your class.

Several study modes sit behind a paywall.

Making sets by hand

Total control, total effort. Typing each card means you read the material — but it eats hours before you ever study.

Easy to fall behind and skip a chapter when the workload piles up.

No help spotting the concepts that actually matter for the exam.

No way to grade yourself on harder, open-ended questions.

Best for students
Scholarly

Sets in seconds, then study or export. Upload a PDF and get a full study set instantly — export to Quizlet or study right here.

AI pulls the concepts worth testing so nothing important slips through.

Edit and clean up cards before you study — no manual typing.

Free spaced repetition and AI-graded exam mode, no paywalled study modes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Quizlet flashcards?

Upload your PDF above and Scholarly's AI reads it and builds term/definition cards from the concepts inside. Review and edit them, then export a Quizlet-compatible term/definition list you can paste into a new Quizlet set with the Import option — or skip the export and study right here.

Can I import the flashcards directly into Quizlet?

Yes. We generate a Quizlet-compatible term/definition format that imports cleanly into a new Quizlet set, or you can study the cards directly on Scholarly with spaced repetition and exam mode.

Is the PDF to Quizlet converter free?

Yes — you can convert a PDF to a study set on the free plan. Free accounts process files up to 8 MB and read the first 32 pages of a PDF, with 1 lifetime free AI generation; paid plans raise those limits. Studying the cards is always free.

How many flashcards can I create from a PDF?

There's no fixed card count — the AI scales the set to how much testable material your PDF contains, pulling the key concepts and relationships rather than padding the deck with filler. You can then trim, merge, or edit cards before you study or export.

Is this a free Quizlet alternative?

It can be. Beyond exporting to Quizlet, Scholarly is a free Quizlet alternative in its own right: a free Learn-style spaced-repetition mode, AI-graded practice exams, and chat grounded in your PDF — no paywalled study modes. See the full Scholarly vs Quizlet breakdown at /vs/quizlet-alternative.

Are the cards based on my actual PDF?

Yes. The cards are grounded in the exact document you upload, so they cover what your class actually tests — not what a stranger's public Quizlet set happened to include. Lecture slides, textbook chapters, research papers, and scanned notes all work.
